Fitchburg Police reminded residents to be vigilant about reducing chances for crimes of opportunity given the recent wave of teen car thefts, which have almost tripled since 2016 and are being committed by kids (average age 14.8 years old).

Don't leave unattended cars running (even if you're trying to "warm it up").

Don't leave cars unlocked or leave keys in cars.

Make it your routine to close and lock doors to homes and garages.

Look out for your neighbors. Contact neighbors when doors are left open to remind them. You may be preventing a crime.

Program the Fitchburg Police Department non-emergency number into your cell phone (and post it somewhere handy in your home) and CALL if you see suspicious activity or have concerns: 608-270-4300  Stay safe Lacy Heights!

Lacy Heights Neighborhood Watch Program is one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent crime and reduce fear in our neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch Programs fight the isolation and separation that crime creates and feeds upon. As neighbors, collectivity we want our neighborhood safe and crime free. Participating in the Neighborhood Program is easy. Here are some basic helpful tips:

What Neighborhood Watch Members Look For

  • Keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
Someone screaming or shouting for help
Someone looking into windows and parked cars
    Unusual noises
Property being taken out of houses where no one is at home or a business is closed
Cars, vans, or trucks moving slowly with no apparent destination, or without lights
Anyone being forced into a vehicle
A stranger sitting in a car or stopping to talk to a child
    Abandoned cars.

What you can do

• Keep your bikes locked up and keep your garage shut when you are not around.
• Contact the Fitchburg police at 270-4300 (non-emergency) if something seems amiss.
• Dog owners can be of great help during their nightly walk. Take the time to check around the schools for suspicious activity.
• Fitchburg has a curfew form 10pm to 4am. Juveniles are not allowed on school property or at our park after 10pm.
• If you have further questions or suggestions, please feel free to email our Lacy Heights Neighborhood Committee at watch@lacyheights.org or visit Fitchburg's Crime Prevention Information .
